Two Masking Techniques - Courage and Faith & Spotlight on Nature

The masking technique can often seem very intimidating however it doesn't have to be.  Yesterday during my Fun Friday Live I demonstrated two very simple masking techniques, reverse masking & frame masking.

The first technique in my video is the reverse masking technique.  The left card using Daffodil Delight, Soft Sea Foam and Lemon Lolly was created using the reverse masking technique.  The second card, on the right, was made using what I call the frame masking technique.  This technique reminds me a lot of the torn paper technique I do on occasion.

Here are the details for each card.

Reverse Masking
  • Card base: 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" scored in the middle at 4 1/4"
  • Layer #1: 5 1/4" x 4"
  • Interior panel: 5 1/4" x 4" (usually white or very vanilla)
  • Reverse masking used the middle circle in the Deckled Circles die set (either 7 or 8 from the center).  The die was used to cut the circle from the masking paper.
  • Shading was created by using small blending brushes.

Frame Masking
  • Card base: 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" scored at 4 1/4"
  • Layer #1: 5 1/4" x 4"
  • Interior panel: 5 1/4" x 4" (usually white or very vanilla)
  • Frame is created by placing strips of the masking paper around each side of the first layer.
  • Shading was created by using small blending brushes.

Tip for using masking paper: before you place the masking paper on your card stock tap the sticky surface on a piece of material (pants, shirt, etc.) 2 or 3 times.  This will allow the paper to retain some stickiness but it won't be so sticky that it rips your cardstock when you peal the mask off.

These two masking techniques have become new favorites especially right now while I prepare for craft fair season.

Happy Stamping!

Reindeer Days Gift Card Holder

Tis' the season for gift card holders!  Today during Teach it Tuesday with Tammy & Jennie we shared a couple of different gift card holders you can easily make. These gift card holders create a little excitement when gift giving.

My gift card holder was inspired by Julie the Paper Pixie.  She made an accordion fun fold card and then I put a twist on it by making it into a gift card holder.

Here is my spin on her card.  The details and measurements are listed below.

Details:

  • Card base: 11" x 4 1/4" scored along the 11" side at 2 3/4" & 7 1/4"  then flip it over and score at 4 1/4" & 8 1/2"
  • Layer Card front: Patterned paper 4"x4"
  • Layer Card middle: Patterned paper 4"x4"
  • Sentiment on card front: 3 1/4" x 2" & 1 3/4" x 3 (white)
  • Gift card pocket: 2" x 4"
  • Interior: 4" x 2 1/4" (white)

To watch how this card is made you can follow along with this video.

Hang an Ornament & Season of Green and Gold

Since October is almost here it is time to start showcasing Christmas/Holiday cards and projects.   Today I am sharing with you a fun card that was created by using a sketch found on page 22 of the 2024-2025 Stampin' Up! catalog.  I am using the new Hang an Ornament Bundle, from the September - December 2024 Mini Catalog, with the online exclusive Season of Green and Gold designer series paper to create an elegant Christmas/Holiday card.

Since there is gold in the patterned paper I decided to break out and use, for the very first time, the gold Wow! Metallic Embossing powder.  Let me tell you, now I know why "Wow!" is in the title of the product.  It is amazing embossing powder.  I don't regret buying it and know I will be using it and the silver alot this season.

The card base is Cherry Cobbler with the green and gold paper cut into 1/2" wide strips.  The ornament was also die cut out of Cherry Cobbler so that it would pop against the green and gold paper.  Check out the dimensions below.

Card Details:

  • Card base: 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" scored at 4 1/4"
  • Layer #1: 1/2" x 3 3/4" strips of coordinating patterned paper - you will need 11 pieces
  • Layer #2: 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" card stock same color as the card base
  • Layer #3: 1" x 2" white card stock
  • Ribbon: approximately 5" - 6" for a bow
  • Ink: Versa Mark and Gold embossing powder
  • Interior: 5 1/4" x 4" Very Vanilla or White & 1/2" x 6" coordinating pattern paper

Here is a close up of the ornament that has been stamped and embossed.  Isn't the detail on the stamp amazing!

If you would like to watch this card being made and learn a tip for how to make sure the strips are laid evenly from top to bottom check out this video.

Garden Meadow Window & Splendid Autumn

For the month of September I was given the opportunity to be a Guest Stamper in my Luv 2 Stamp group and it was awesome!  I will share over the next few weeks some of the cards I made using the Garden Meadow Bundle. Although there will be no videos like many of my other posts there will be supplies and measurements listed just in case you would like to recreate the card.

Today's show and tell is a fun one that uses the window die from the bundle to give the impression of looking out over a creek meandering through autumn trees.

 Card Details & Measurements:

  • Card base: Garden Green 11" x 4 1/4" scored at 5 1/2"
  • Layer #1: DSP Splendid Autumn 4" x 5"
  • Layer #2: Garden Green 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" embossed with the Exposed Brick embossing folder then the "window" die was used to cut out the opening.
  • Layer #3: Crushed Curry 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" then the shape was cut out using the banner die from Nested Essentials Dies.
  • Sentiment: Garden Meadows stamp set and Garden Green ink.
  • Interior has a 5 1/4" x 4" panel of Very Vanilla for any handwritten note or additional sentiments.

If you want to make the interior fancy you could add a 1/2" strip of the remaining DSP to the right side or bottom of the Very Vanilla panel.

I hope you enjoyed this card it was inspired by many of the samples I found on Pinterest.  Keep an eye out for other cards I have made with this bundle over the next couple of weeks.

Happy Stamping!
